You will often long, exhaustive lists of all the things you should be doing for marketing, and that can often overwhelming – especially to figure out what will work for your specific business, and what is better left behind.

However, you do not often find articles that will tell you what to avoid, or what not to do really. In our extensive experience, we have come across some definite marketing don’ts that are worth sharing.

1) Don’t assume you can do it all yourself

It might seem easy or better to just do all the marketing yourself, without really delegating. After all, if there are fewer people involved, work will get done faster…right? Unfortunately, that is not the case. Usually, running everything yourself will mean that you are spread thin, and things will slip through the cracks. Work to find the right team, and delegate work as needed.

2) Don’t use too much jargon

Sometimes, marketing feels like its own language and it might be tempting to slip into that – resist the urge! People immediately shy away when they hear too many terms they do not know, and it can be overwhelming. Learn how to explain your position and views in simple terms, because that will make the biggest impact.

3) Don’t rely on one marketing channel

It might seem better to focus all your efforts on one marketing channel, but it is better to resist that urge and ensure that you are covering all your bases. Of course, you should increase engagement on channels where you see most attention (i.e. social media) but do not base all your strategy on one channel.

4) Don’t focus too much on the competition

It is good to keep an eye on your competitors, but do not try to emulate them too much. Your business is unique, and your marketing should speak to that. It is easy to get distracted by what others are doing, but ensure that your focus is always on your business – not the others.

5) Don’t be afraid to go out of the box

Marketing today defies a lot of the traditional methods from the past, so do not be afraid to try something new and innovative. The marketplace today is far more competitive, so businesses are more likely to take risks with their marketing strategy in order to stand out so it is better to be part of that trend.

These are some of the most important marketing don’ts – it is better to avoid these, as you will be far more successful. To learn more about marketing and how we can help, please contact us today.
